How to Prepare for Cinco de Mayo

Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone! Today over 100 celebrations will take place all across the United States. From live mariachi music and dancing to Mexican cuisine and games, Cinco de Mayo almost always promises a good time.

If you’re hosting your own Cinco de Mayo celebration, we have 3 tips on how to make preparing for your party a breeze.

  • Decorations: Nothing says “party” like a home festively decorated. Use streamers and mesh ribbon rolls to liven up any wall, or scope out some vintage Mexican artwork to hang on the walls. Red, white, and green are the colors of the Mexican flag and are an ideal color palette for decorating the home. For extra interactive fun, provide masks and sombreros for guests to wear while they chow down on some delicious cuisine.
  • Mexican Cuisine: Mexican cuisine has some truly outstanding dishes, so take this opportunity to indulge! Dishes like tamales, chiles rellenos, enchiladas, pozole rojo, and more are perfect savory dishes. For dessert, you can have flan, sopapillas, ice cream, or even sweet tamales. Whether you make it yourself at home, or go out for catering, make sure you have enough to accommodate the entire party.
  • Live Entertainment: Mexican music is a must for properly celebrating Cinco de Mayo. There are countless options available: Tejano, mariachi, and banda are just some of the different kinds of bands you can hire to play at your party. If there aren’t any local groups in your area, you can prepare playlists and CDs with some fun and upbeat music to play in the background.

Perhaps most important however, is to just have fun with your friends and family. As a host it is easy to get caught up in all the details, but a relaxed and engaged host is just as important for yourself as it is for your guests.

Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone!
