Why masks? They form an integral part of the Mardi Gras tradition, having been worn at the special event for hundreds of years. Originally, they allowed attendees to escape the social constraints imposed on the people. Class level and wealth wasn’t immediately exposed, and people could rejoice in the festivities without worrying about their identity being revealed and, thus, their reputation being tarnished. As an added bonus, masks added an element of mystery to Mardi Gras.
